Come celebrate Earth Hour at University of Malaya

earth-hour-2010.jpg During Earth Hour, millions of individuals and organizations will turn off their lights for one hour, demonstrating that by working together, we can all make a difference in the fight against climate change. Again this year, University of Malaya will join hands with various other organizations in this wonderful moment of solidarity.

However, in addition to what the University haas done in 2009, they are including more activities throughout the day this year to make it a more participative and meaningful event. The event is open to all members of the UM community and the public.

Following is a brief summary of the UM EARTH HOUR 2010 programme:

(1) UM CAR-BOOT SALE (jointly organized/sponsored by UMCARES, UM UNESCO CLUB and PUSMAL UM, with contributions by Tupperware)

Time: 1000 - 1700

Venue: DTC compound

Description: Join us in promoting the culture of RE-USE, while building relationship with different sections of the community! Grab these opportunity to support the carbooteers and buy re-usable items at really low prices while contributing to Mother Earth. (2) SCREENING OF THE MOVIE “AGE OF STUPID” (organized by UMCARES and EcoKnights, fully sponsored by British Council)

Time: 1400 – 1700

Venue: Dewan Kuliah Cempaka, Science Faculty

ecoknights-logo.jpg Description: This is a must watch movie, an eye-opener to environmental issues especially those related to Climate Change. “The Age of Stupid” is a 2009 British drama-documentary-animation hybrid which stars Pete Postlethwaite as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, watching archive footage from the mid-to-late 2000s and asking "Why didn't we stop climate change when we had the chance?". The filming of the movie will be followed by a joint-discussion by the Director of UM Climate Change Centre, Prof. Dr. Khairulmaini Osman Salleh and a representative by British Council, moderated by Yasmin Ras from EcoKnights. Light refreshment will be served. Seats are limited for the first 250 participants only. (3) LIGHTS OFF!! (organized/sponsored by UMCARES and UM UNESCO CLUB, with contributions by British Council)

Time: 2000 - 2200

Venue: DTC

Description: Don’t miss out the great opportunity to be a part of this world-wide LIGHTS-OFF event!! Some of the activities during event include:

  • An inspirational environmental address by Matthias Gelber on the topic of “A life filled with Earth Hours!!!” (Matthias is a green entrepreneur and a recipient of the 2008 Greenest Person on the Planet Award)
  • Lighting of candles, as a symbol of hope and reflection for the environment.
  • Releasing of white pigeons, as a symbol of peace and freedom for the environment.
  • Singing of environmental songs, as a symbol of solidarity and passion to act for the environment.

The first 300 participants of the LIGHTS OFF!! Event would be given away free satchets of BioHome - 100% plant base and biodegradable dish washing liquid.

NOTE: Campus Bus Service would be provided to fetch and also send back students to their respective Residential Colleges for this event.
